What age range do you teach voice and piano lessons to?

I teach all ages, five years old and up. Lesson style varies depending on the age and needs of the student.

For students ten and under, lessons focus on learning how to read music and apply it to singing, along with student led vocal exploration. Lessons will focus on helping students find the words to express how they are experiencing their voice and how to apply that to music, with the goal of giving them a love of music that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives!

What styles of music do you teach?

I teach musical theatre and modern contemporary styles. My background is in musical theatre, but most of my professional career has been in contemporary pop music.

How do I sign up for lessons?

What will we do in the intro lesson?

We will spend time building rapport, talking about what you hope to get out of lessons, and going over lesson structure. Then the student will have the opportunity to either sing me a song that they have prepared or they can opt to go through some vocal warm-ups and exercises. I let the student take the lead here and choose what works best for them.

From there we begin the process of what I like to call a "collaborative evaluation". We will discuss how the student interpreted their performance, and possible solutions to the things that the student feels is hindering their performance/voice the most.

Can I take voice lessons as an adult?

Absolutely.! Voice lessons are a great way for adults to feel more connected to their body and build confidence in using their voice. They are also incredibly helpful for anyone who has to use their voice a lot for public speaking or communication in general. A big part of lessons will focus on vocal endurance, sustainability, and presence.

Do I need any past musical experience to take voice, piano, or songwriting lessons?

You definitely do not! I’m here to meet you where you are. If it is your first time taking lessons then you get to walk into the studio with a beginner's mind, which is a mindset that is helpful to have for every student, whether they are experienced or not.

I was told I was tone deaf. Is it worth taking lessons?

The short answer is yes.

Being “tone deaf” refers to a hearing disorder called amusia, which can only be diagnosed by a medical professional. Only about four percent of the population has it. If anyone other than a medical professional told you that you were tone deaf, they were not qualified to make that claim.

Many students sing at the same pitch they use when speaking in everyday life. Their voice often hasn’t been used to make the different sounds that allow it to match pitch accurately. Voice lessons help students explore the full range of sounds their voice can make.

It can feel vulnerable to sign up for lessons after being told this. My goal is for you to leave lessons feeling empowered to sing the way you always deserved to and to rediscover the joy of making music with your voice.
